Welcome to Quito! Sunday June 15th
Upon arrival at the airport, after clearing customs and migration, meet your guide at the arrival’s hall holding a sign board with your name on it. Your guide escorts you to your awaiting vehicle and transfers you to your hotel where you receive check-in procedures assistance.
Upon arrival at Quito airport, you are met by an airport assistant to guide you through customs and migrations into the arrivals hall where you are then met by a guide and transferred to your hotel where you are assisted with check-in procedures.
Embraced by the mighty Andes and set at the foot of the 4784-meter Pichincha volcano sits Quito, the world’s first UNESCO heritage site, the world’s highest capital and the former capital of the Inca Empire. This is a city of contrasts that offers something for every guest– from colonial architecture, to fine art galleries, museums and sophisticated hotels. Quito even gives you the possibility to straddle the Equator with just a 30–minute drive.
Be it for business or leisure, we must all agree that Quito makes an excellent destination to visit, and if you want to enhance it to a higher level, we definitely recommend the Holiday Inn Quito Airport!
Blessed with a great location, just 10 minutes from Quito’s International Airport, we really like this property, as it allows to make the most of a stay, avoiding long trips to the airport, while offering the benefit of wellness treats, great food and a few more minutes of precious sleep! Said this and thanks to the fresh ambiance and well-equipped facilities in general, we definitely recommend this place for couples, families, groups or solo travelers spending a night in Quito or in search for a day use, before their flight.

Innumerable bird, mammal and plant species, isolated tribes and ancient head-shrinking rituals are just some of the things that can be found in the mythical Ecuadorian Amazonia. As the most bio-diverse place on earth, signs of life can be found with every step. Boat rides and treks allow guests to learn the local legends, traditions and secrets of a land that was never conquered and has been worshipped for centuries now.
After landing and completing airport procedures, a hired bus picks you up from the airport and drops you five minutes later to Puerto Francisco de Orellana. Here, begin your two-hour trip down the Napo River aboard a comfortable covered motor canoe to your destination, Napo Wildlife Center.
Enjoy lunch along the way and see birds such as herons, kingfishers and many others. Take a short break at Napo Wildlife Center’s outer dock before embarking on a majestic and peaceful dugout canoe ride to the lodge itself. You’ll be surrounded by trees overhead as your canoe paddles along a narrow creek that connects to the lake where the lodge is located. Civilization is soon forgotten here and the only sounds you’ll hear are the dip of the paddles and the myriad calls of the surrounding rainforest. Keep an eye out for monkey sightings as well as large birds such as toucans, parrots and macaws. You’ll soon enter Añangu Lake and spot the lodge situated on its shores. Before long, you’ll have a welcome drink in hand as you settle into your luxurious cabaña.
After a delicious dinner, head back to the water for caiman spotting and listen to the natural nocturnal sounds of the rainforest.
In 1541, the first Europeans set out from Quito to explore the dense jungles east of this ancient Inca capital in search of gold and cinnamon. Neither the jungle nor the natives ever revealed where the precious metal of El Dorado was to be found, but the explorers traveled 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) down the Napo to come upon what they thought was the Atlantic. But it wasn’t the Atlantic … yet. It was the Great Amazon River, fed by over 1,000 tributaries, emptying one third of the planet’s fresh water into the sea.
Almost 500 years have gone by since the discovery of this magnificent river system that flows through the world’s largest primeval forest, containing 10 percent of all existing trees, 70 percent of all pharmaceutical compounds and native Indians that live symbiotically with their unique ecosystem. This is the habitat of wildlife that is watching you – or vice versa, if you’re lucky: 500 species of birds, half a dozen species of monkeys, caimans, tapirs, 2,500 species of butterflies and more.
4 nights
June 17th
After an early breakfast, depart for the finest canopy tower on Napo River. At 36 meters (118 feet) high, the Napo Wildlife Center’s (NWC) canopy tower is a spectacular way to experience wildlife above the forest floor. This is one of two canopy towers at the NWC (the other is attached to the dining hall and provides great views of the lake and its surrounds).
The tower is located about 20 minutes from the lodge, deep within the terra firme forest. Ascend the 12-story tower and take note of the different forest levels before you emerge on top of a huge ceiba tree.
Once on the wooden platform, which is actually built into the tree, experience a view formerly reserved only for the birds.
The metal tower itself was constructed to the highest standards, galvanized, and carefully inspected by engineers to ensure safety as a top priority. Flocks of colorful tanagers pass right through the canopy of the tree, as do blue-and-yellow macaws. In nearby trees, spider monkeys search for fruit, two species of large toucans call in the early mornings and afternoons and the life of the forest canopy opens up before you. Birds that are virtually impossible to see from the forest floor far below are suddenly right beside you, oblivious to your presence. The canopy tower opens a whole new world.
After drinking in the amazing views from the tower, head back to the lodge for lunch. This afternoon, explore a terra firme trail with possibility of seeing lizards, colorful manakins or the unique and endemic golden-mantled tamarin monkeys. After the hike, explore the lake and creeks by dugout canoe, where you’re likely to come across a family of giant otters.
June 18th
Rise early and take advantage of the best time of day for parrot viewing. One of the best parrot clay licks in Ecuador is located one hour from the lodge and you’ll reach it just as the day’s parrot activity kicks off. A total of 11 species of parrots, parakeets and macaws can be seen.
Later, hike along a forest trail to visit the nearby Quichua community of A?angu, spend time with a local family and learn about life in the rainforest. Afterward, return to the creek and hike through the terra firme forest for about 30 minutes in order to reach a second parrot clay lick.
Weather permitting, watch different species of parrots, parakeets and macaws. It’s the perfect spot for a packed lunch before returning to the lodge in the afternoon.
June 19th
Take a morning hike along the Tiputini trail and its terra firme and swamp forests, searching for wildlife such as golden-mantled tamarins, white-faced capuchin monkeys, two- and three-toed sloths, pygmy squirrels as well as predators and their tracks on the forest floor. Return to the lodge for lunch and a rest. In the afternoon, paddle in canoes to explore areas deeper in the surrounding creeks with more chances to see unique wildlife. After dinner, watch a video about the community and Napo Wildlife Center.
June 20th
Make an early departure for a canoe excursion back to Napo River, where you might have new encounters with giant otters, monk saki monkeys or any number of rare birds.
At the Napo Wildlife Center docking area, take a short break before embarking by motorized canoe for your return to Coca, where you’ll transfer to the airport for your return flight to Quito.
